I'm not aware of any ways of converting accented to non-accented letters except for german. As you say, they replace the umlaut with an e. e.g. "ä" becomes "ae", "ö" becomes "oe" and "ü" becomes "ue". Their "Ã" simply becomes "ss".
However, you can enter accented words into most search engines and computer text programs. I find that the easiest way is to use the "Alt" key and a numerical code.
I think the numbers may vary for other countries, but on a standard UK keyboard, upper case accented letters can be found between "Alt" plus 0192 (Ã) to 0221 (Ã) and lower case ones between "Alt" plus 0223 (Ã) to 0253 (ý).
Remember you hold the "Alt" key down while you type in the 4-digit number - and you do need the zero at the beginning.
There are also a load of other symbols between 0128 (€) and 0191 (¿).
Have a look! Hope this helps.

Search for 'Alt keys' or similar, then you can print off a list of all the accented symbols etc. You hold down the Alt key and type the number. E.g. Alt0198 = Ã, Alt0229 = Ã¥. Alt0223 = Ã.
Hope this helps

If you're on Windows, you can use character map. On the start menu, choose 'run' and then type 'charmap'.
In the program, find the character that you want, click 'select' and then 'copy'. Then go the search engine and do 'Ctrl + V' at the same time to paste it.
