Usually it is for credit checks or background checks depending on the type of job. If you won't give yours then it is up to the employer whether you are hired or paid in cash.

Come on. If you want to be paid in cash, then you're not looking for the type of job that requires an application. I can see your point about the SSN, but SSN is used to determine eligibility to work. The employer needs to know this up front so that any unnecessary processing goes on of ineligible candidates. If you want a cash job have you considered prostitution, gun running or drug dealing?

Most Employers screen their applicants. A social security number can tell an employer many things they need to know in order to hire someone. However, not to many employers will pay " under the table" ( cash ). If it is a job where there is the potential for being hurt. It is very risky for a emploryer not to have you listed on the insurance neccesary to cover you if you are injured. There are labor laws protecting employers and employee's. But most important I think. If its a problem for you to put your ss number on a application. My question would be more why does it bother you. Being paid cash for a job is just another way of ripping off the system. Uncle sam wants his ya know!

So they can run your credit. Employers are real serious about doing background checks these days. Discuss your payment options. Usually a company that requires a social security number will put you on payroll Be careful if they do pay you cash to expect a 1099 that you will have to file with a tax return and pay the taxes you would have paid if you were on payroll.

I hire or oversee the hiring of about 2000 people per year. If someone fails to complete our application fully we throw them away. Many employers use the application to run pre-employment screening through databases and you can't do that without a SSN.

another way the government can track you down and know where you work so if you owed taxes, child support, wanted by the fbi? If you don't the employer can get in trouble for, hiding you kind of (harboring a fugitive). Can be fined and have to do community service. U can still get paid in cash if cash still exist now days I havn't seen cash in years!

your ssn is used for tax purposes....the state and federal government use this number to submit correct income tax info...even if you are paid in cash...taxes need to be applied for above the board business....if you are being paid under the table and without taxes, then you don't need a tax number.(ssn)..just don't get caught.

Background check, citizenship status, credit check and identification. Depends on what the job is and what financial responsibilities you would have.
Paid in cash? Why?

You are not obligated to give your number out until they have a valid reason for needing it (to run a background check, put you on the payroll, etc).

Just because someone asks for something doesn't mean you have to give it.
