It is EXTREMELY rude to say the least! And as for the suggestion that it should be called "vertically challenged" why that's just plain STUPID. That is an expression used for people (and perhaps giraffes.)
One should properly use "size-challenged" or "circumferenchilly- challenged." That would be much more proper under the circumstances.
I also take great exception to reading that it has been "demoted" or "reduced" in status. These are words favored by the white, male-dominated, right-wing elitist-fascists of this world. It would be much more non-judgmental to say that it has been "re-assigned a more appropriate planetary nomenclature" or it's "adjectival status" has been "more descriptively appraised."

Ahh was just reading about this yesterday- poor Pluto being demoted to a 'dwarf planet'. Now teachers have to re-teach and children have to re- learn that there are 8 planets only in our solar system now and that Pluto is now recognized as a Dwarf Planet. I think all educationalists now have to explain in the lessons why the changes have been made with some illustrations with clear explanations why. Most importantly explaining why astronomers and scientists discover new things all the time and that this is a natural development with all researches when new info is discovered.

When I was answer-ing a previous Pluto question something unknown tap me gently on my left foot . It is not rude to call it a dwarf planet , but it is strange to me to say that it is no longer a planet in our solor system , because of its' size .

A midget is in the cells (born that way) and a dwarf is in the glands, so yes, it's a bit rude. It should be labeled a vertically challenged planet instead.
