Download / upload speed is the number of bits that can be received form any website or from your computer to any destination per second. This is set by the ISP (internet service provider) ,the guy who gives you internet connection. If you have more speed you can do your work on internet more fastly.
Some times it is also called bandwidth.

Yes surfing of web pages cause data transfer. You can see a web page if only your browser can download the html code from the website you are surfing.
In the case of downloading any software or music or films the amount of data from that particular site or place is more significant and noticable,But the thing is viewing a webpage and downloading a software ,both involve data transfer. In the later case it is more visible or noticable for us.

The down load 7 upload speeds of the internet is the spped by which u can transfer data either to of fro the net. It is dependent on the connection u are having, the Modem u are having, the explorer, O.S, cache memory e.t.c.

1 G.B. data transfer is tranfering 1 G.B. of data either to fro the net or between the 2 systems in a lan or wan.

Surfing of the web page also causes the data transfer, cause whetever u see is just the 0 & 1 pattern which flows from ur system to the server & from the server to ur system.

Actually everything done by the IIS(internet Information server).
It gets the request from the client, invokes the necessary worker process(there are different worker process for asp, asp.net or jsp files). that worker processes fetches the page from server does the necessary stuff(like database manipulation, generating the HTML code from asp or jsp code etc), then the IIS sends the stuff back to u. ur browser detects the bits, compiles them based on the JIT compiler iterpretes the HTML(actually interpretation happens before compilation) & gives u the output.

Thanx

Browser surfing web pages ccause data transfer yes, even idling but idling causing very little transfers, no more than saying "hey I am still around". Anything else related to a change in status of your Internet program also causes transfers, very little too. The biggies are activities that you are doing and being aware of doing on a computer.

You cannot regulate it on your end, ISPs have specialized software to do that but you don't..

256KBites of data transfer per second. that's like a MB in 4 mins. that's a lot. Ya can't really regulate it unless you use something like gozilla and put a limitatin on how much it down/up-loads.
