Your "retirement years." After you've busted your *** all your life, raised your kids, paid your mortgage, helped your kids buy their first house after paying for their weddings and buying them their first cars and helping them pay off, if not paying it all, their college tuition, not to mention spending how much time in the emergency room when they broke bones, or shelling out money for braces; yada, yada, yada. Now, ideally, you get to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labors, enjoy your grandchildren, do all those things you always wanted to do in your life after you took care of all your responsibilities and saw that everyone was provided for, but back then there was just never enough time and money to do. And just maybe, if you're lucky, have your children look in on you and respect all that you did for them. And if you were a truly good parent, have them ask you for your wisdom and advice. The golden years are a time to reflect upon all we have done with our lives, or didn't do. Ideally, it's a time when we once again get to be as innocent, wide-eyed children after all our years of labor, and just enjoy our remaining years here on God's earth instead of struggling to survive just to live in it and do right by those we love. Guess you gotta get there to truly understand what I'm saying. We grow old too soon, and too wise to late. Mercy, how old are you that you would even contemplate such a question? Elders? You make it sound like you're asking this question of 90-year-olds. May you reach your "golden years" surrounded by those who love and cherish and respect you. Only then, will you truly appreciate what the saying means. It's kinda like they have medals in the Olympics. You've earned the GOLD because you've worked, struggled against the odds, trained all your life, paid your dues. YOU DESERVE THE GOLD!
ps. It's "What are the Golden years, not "What is."

I think anyone over 50 is considered in their golden years Since I'm 55 I don't think I agree with that. I would guess it means that you can retire and not have to work anymore and can enjoy the time you have left in this life.
