Well we had them on our house built in 1981. They are called turbine-style attic vents. They always looked like a chefs hat in shape to me, you know the ones with the round poofy top that looks kinda pleated, only the vent spun around kinda like a pinwheel but not the kind on a stick but more like if it were laying flat, kinda... anyways hope this helps a little.. try asking at the site below and here is as best a pic I can give in example with this here keyboard... ;)

They are ran by the heat escaping from the attic or the rafters. They serve two purposes that I know of. The house is cooler by venting the hot air out. Also venting the same area when there are no vents. Most homes have vents at each end of the house. You could probably find it on the net by asking How to ventilate attic or rafters.

They are natural draft fans for the apartment buildings and other structures. Go to the Home Depot site and below is a description of one model. I hope this is what you were looking for.

It is an attic ventilation system. We had one that worked with an attic fan. Cooled the house almost as well as an A/C except on REAL HOT days. We had ours for about 12 years before we put in A/V and still have them for ventilating the heat out of the attic.

Website is: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/wwg/productIndex.shtml?originalValue=attic+ventilators&L2=Attic&operator=prodIndexRefinementSearch&L1=Ventilators%2C

And a picture of it is on the 12th item on that page.
Number is: 2C529

Hope it helps. If not do a search for "attic ventilators".

i believe they're called squirrel cages. They are used for ventilation. The rising hot air hits the louvered vanes that are punched into the spherical part causing it to spin ,thus removing hot air from from the building.
