...why should you have to choose? Make a living AND maintain a happy marriage/ relationship/ partnership/ whatever. Lots of people do it.

You cannot choose between those two things, they are completely different.
Work on the relationship is much more important though, because family is a priority. Unfortunately, having a family means having to be able to financially sustain it, and so in order to work on your relationship you have to go working to earn money. You don't need to be a millionaire, but to raise kids, money is needed. To work on your relationship entails that you earn a bit of money as well because just sitting at home the whole day, lazing, during the whole year, is not very good for any relationship, as routine comes in. If no one works, there will be money problem, and then the relationship will be likely to have problems as well if one person is too lazy to even do a single thing.
In the absolute, the relationship must have priority...but it is a pretty interesting, though hard to answer question.

I think that question depends on your expectations of having this last. Money can only make you so happy and be gone in an instant, but the relationship will have benefits that will last a lifetime. SO if you choose to earn the money and let the relationship go, who is going to be there to share the wealth? Surely not the one you are in a relationship with now. Yet, if you choose the relationship, there will always be time to earn money together. Nobody said we had to make millions...we only need to make a living.

I have been dealing with this issue for years. Financial stress and a solid financial foundation is very important in a relationship. Financial stress can rip apart a relationship. You have to find the balance. You can't live on love. you cant raise a family on crackers and catsup. look into using money more efficiently so you do not need to work as much.
