One common use of the term is to describe the condition of Western History since the mid-1400s, or roughly the European discovery of moveable type and the printing press. This period is said to be characterized by:
Rise of the nation state
Industrialization
Rise of capitalism
Emergence of socialist countries
Rise of representative democracy
Increasing role of science and technology
Rise of social movements
Urbanization
Mass literacy
Proliferation of mass media
Periods include:
The Age of Discovery
The Renaissance
The Reformation and Counter Reformation
The Age of Reason
The Enlightenment
the Romantic
the Victorian
the Modern
the Postmodern
The above is all taken from the wikipedia entry on "modernity," which is actually rather good.

the opposite to post modernity, oh not really but it depends on the concept you put your phrase in, is it to do with arts, or politics, or sociology or psychology, which ever perspective it needs to be looked at the theory aspect of what you intend to do with the phrase modernity. modernity is in present times in meaning what attitudes beliefs are of the modern world, this includes a variety of things such as fashion the arts politics, etc. post modernity is what probably happened before the time of the Renaissonce, most artists will be able to back that up. but what is the true meaning you want from the question "wot is modernity", if you are really having prob;lems find out wot context you want and go and look it up on the net, there will be abundant resources and information, okat good luck.
