To open a gmail account, you should have invitation from some one having gmail account. Once you get the invitation click on the link given in the invitation and open your account.

yes you can do it by urself - you don't need an invite as long as you get that code sent to your cell phone - and if you get it download the gmail notifier - it's great - lets you know when you have mail from the desktop view - it pops up

you need someone who already has an existing gmail account to send you an INVITE. otherwise you cant open one by yourself.
