I used to have a cat that would try to open the door to get inside where the cat food his. She'd climb up the and start trying to turn the door knob. Never got inside, but that's gotta be pretty impressive for an animal. So, where do cats rank in the animal kingdom when it comes to intelligence?

It's hard to measure inteligence between species in any meaningful way, but as far as we can tell:

Cats are nowhere near as intelligent as dogs.
They are much more intelligent than rats or cows.
They are probably about as intelligent as horses.
They are probably slightly less inteligent than pigs.

I agree with leviter. Cats come in some place below Dogs, Pigs, Dolphins and Horses. Not training a dog to use the bathroom is more a problem with the design of the fixture and no put down on the dogs intelligence. Cats, on the other hand, can not be trained to lead the blind, sniff out drugs and explosives, rescue drowning people or preform many of the jobs that for a dog just come naturally.

I think cats are very smart... My cat knows how to turn the sink faucet on when he is out of water, he knows how to open the window to get ousdie he knows when I am upset, he will come & wipe the tears from my face, he knows when I am in pain with a headache or something else he will just sit on me & purr.. He is a very smart cat so I would say cats are very smart

I agree with Rosie the cat. While you can't really train a cat, they can train YOU. Mine has taught me to recognize different meows which mean different things, will catch and fetch but only when he wants to play, and knows words in English, even when not spoken to him. He knows tuna, candy, bed etc. He also knows when my husband is going to make tuna fish salad by what accessories he takes out of the cabinet and pantry, before he even reaches for the tuna can. They recognize patterns of behavior.

Good question but scientists really are just beginning to understand human intelligence. It's not really possible to come up with an objective scale when the scale isn't finished yet.

It's funny that you humans keep asking that question. Obviously, we are the pinnacle of life on this planet. After all, you feed us, buy us toys that we ignore, let us sleep on your sofas and beds, and for what? We do absolutely nothing. You still have to ask?

Yours truly,
Rosie the Cat

Agree with the others, but I'd say they are geniuses at being cats anyway. Plus they have fabulous Gung Fu.
