This actually started back in the olden days and Hallmark picked up on it. I'm assuming they had to give paper back then because in the depression there wasn't much else to give. I honestly don't know who actually abides by that guideline now a days. I think the only time people use it is for the 25th and 50th anniversaries with the silver and gold. It's not written in stone that you must do this, it's pretty much a judgement call. You know your spouse better than any of us, so simply ask yourself if your spouse would rather have some monogrammed stationary or a fancy dinner and date with you?

This is the traditional gift. My husband's Grandmother sent us a roll of paper towels. I thought it was cute. There are also Modern gifts. The modern 1st anniversary gift are clocks. You can look them up on line or on most pocket calendars. It's mostly just something fun. I don't think anyone really pays attention to it anymore until you get to 10yr which in modern is Diamond but the traditional you had to wait until 60 year to get to Diamond. Pretty funny, they just figure no one makes it that far in marriage anymore.
