find your location, rent the location, file dba and get business license, check the yellow pages for suppliers for equipment and supplies, and after you file the paperwork [business license and dba] your suppliers will find you....these sales people check the new dba's and business license on a daily basis, and before you are open for business they will leave a card at your door, or if you are in store they will drop by with all the ideas you want or need. they also check new phone listings also
a free place to post ads is craigslist and craiglist is a good site to advertise in your area
craigslist is all over the states and canada and more areas.good luck

Contact a representative, tell them who you are, and ask if they would like to advertise their products in your shop. Also ask what kind of products they would not allow to be shelved with theres. Also ask about promotional and volume discounts, exclusive and dealer discounts, and free products they offer for the representation of their products. Try to seem like your intersted, but like you have better offers, even if you dont. Remeber dont settle, and confidence is key. Best of luck
