Absolutely ethical. People need each other to care about each other. These labels such as "employee" and any other label is just an artificial idea. And every now and then you're gonna run into problems by treating them well and getting close to them. It's a risk well worth taking, and it's an obstacle well worth learning to overcome.

Is it right to show genuine interest in the employees and treat them as individuals. If the question is put this way, I guess, you can call it ethical. as ethics is the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad. Then, it is good or right.

Example: Sue's pregnant, she tells you she's pregnant and you promote Diana over Sue because she's single, can move around and put in the overtime that Sue can't do now that she's pregnant. This is a real life example of where single people are taken advantage of by bosses.
