You have to take yourself as a "project" more seriously. I'm not sure to what "bad" habits you're referring, but the first step is to abandon those (cigarettes, drinking to excess, etc.). Then, focus on educating yourself. It doesn't have to be formal, find a library. Go to a Barnes and Noble or a used bookstore if your budget is limited. Pursue subjects that you're interested in or simply curious about. Learn a musical instrument. Read the New York Times every day from cover to cover. You'll be surprised how much knowledge you can acquire this way.

After awhile, when friends and co-workers have a question about something, they'll say, "Let's ask jimrich...I bet he'll know!"

Then, self-esteem is automatic and the sky becomes your only limit.

How to improve self-esteem? It takes will power to over come anything for one. Where there is a will, there is a way. Being in a negative environment... will not help... Try being around people that are positive... a friendly... helpful environment works. Also try changing things in your life for the good. Changing your circle of friends. Or and appeareance helps... buy a new set of cloths... a different style. Make you feel good about yourself.
On the second question... It is possible if you want it to be.
Good luck!!

Sociology is not the field that would answer this. I would suggest going into the Psychology side. As for Psychology, the use of cognitive therapy would be most appropriate for your goals. For about 8 weeks of sessions, you'll probably improve your self-esteem about 8x what it is now. Another approach is going to your local book store and finding books on the specific topic answered by Cognitive Therapists.
