These all work on 98: http://free.grisoft.com
As for upgrading to 2000, you'll have to uninstall Windows 98 completely and install 2000 to do that.

Think About getting Windows XP instead. It's much faster and more stable than Win 2000. If you're a student, go to your student bookstore and get a nice discount for XP.
As for virus protection, I use AVG Anti Virus. It's Free. You can search for it at www.download.com.

STOP. http://free.grisoft.com
is a solid free for individual home use antivirus, not business AV.
Solid Anti-spy-junk-ware PC protection:

Windows Vistas will have a longer support/shelf life than XP and will come out this coming year. Wait and upgrade the entire PC, if you must. None of this will make the PC faster, only slower, so check start>run...>msconfig>enter

To decide which are safe and which to get rid of for speed. Best Luck. OH, never overlook Hard-drive speeds when upgrading.

You want be able to update Win 9x to Win 2xxx as far as I know. But the best virus guard for your system is AVG. this takes minimum system resources and works really quietly. You can get the AVG Free edition from http://grisoft.com/doc/71/lng/us/tpl/tpl01 and it consists of 1 year free updates too.
