Well, first lets compare them physically... Adult female spotted hyenas weigh as much as 158lbs with males averaging 136lbs. They also have some of the strongest jaws in the animal kingdom and can even eat all the bones of thier kill. Hyenas range in length from 3.9 - 4.9 ft including the tail. An adult hyena's bite pressure can reach 800 lbs. per square inch.
Grey wolf.. weight can range anywhere from 50–130 pounds, making wolves the largest among all wild canids. Although rarely encountered, extreme specimens reaching over 170 lbs have been recorded in Alaska and Canada. Wolves can measure anywhere from 4.5–6.5 feet from nose to tail tip ( I have seen larger pelts, the one hanging in my friends livingroom is 8 ft long)
Thier jaw is powered by 1500 lb/sq. inch of pressure, a wolf's teeth are its main weapons as well as its primary tools.
SO.... a Grey wolf and a Spotted hyena are nearly an even match both in size and physical strength although a wolfs jaw is far stronger than a hyena. I would guess that there is an equal chance for both to beat the other, but since a wolfs bite pressure is 1500lb/sq and a hyenas is 800lb/sq if the wolf bit the hyena once on the back of the neck it would be dead. Really I am rooting for the wolf but it could go either way, with the odds slightly in favor of the wolf strength wise, and slightly in favor of the hyena weight wise. (on average, unless it is a big wolf from around where I live in Canada)
I say the wolf would win because they are stronger and more cunning than a hyena.

I would have to say the spotted hyena. It doesn't matter if the hyena is a relative of the felines or not. For a singe gray wolf is no match for a cougar. Spotted hyenas have the most powerful jaw pressure of any land mammals.

Spotted hyena will win. Its physical bu lid and strength in its jaws will be no match. They have been known to fight lions and all other predators. Wolf may be faster but in a one on one match the hyena is heavier and more aggressive. Its staying power is incredible. These animals are the wonder of Africa. They will out live most animals

Hyenas of course...because there is only one wolf in the way you phrased the question...a barnaric question at that...but I'm not knocking you..I think we are all barbarians still despite our technology and high ideals..check out the annals of Tacitus...and read I, Claudius and Claudius The God by Robert Graves...excellent stuff...
