Well I am sorry to hear that but on the other hand I am glad that someone else has done this besides me. In the middle of the door handle (now the hole where the handle was) the metal thing you mention is the actual door mechanism that turns the pin that allows you to open or close your bathroom door.
In the middle of this you should see a small square hole. Put a small flat ended screwdriver in this, preferably one that just fits (not too small) you want the edges to catch when you turn it. When you turn the screw driver it will turn the latch and open the door. If you don't have a screw driver take another handle apart on a bedroom door and use the handle part that has a 3 inch metal rod sticking out of it and then this to open the door.
Do not try to take that part out otherwise you will have real problems. Hopefully it is not bent and can still be used. If its for a quick fix take a door handle off a basement door, that you hardly use until you can replace it.

Well, if it is a proper bathroom door knob there should be a small hold in the center of outside knob. If there is, just stick a very small screwdriver or heavy paperclip. Anything about 2 inches long and small enough to fit into the hole. Just push in and the door will unlock. However, since you have already removed it this obviously will not work. How did you remove the handle from the outside? Mounting screws are on the inside of a door. Suggestions are good on what to do now. Just follow the others advice.

Well is t here a key kind of lock on it? That would be rather odd if there was. I know mine had the kind of lock where you push a button in. In that case pull apart a pen, use the part where the ink is held and put it inside, wiggle it around a little but very firmly, you should hear a click and voila!
Otherwise? Call your landlord or a locksmith. It's just the time you'll get ill!

Most bathroom doors have a small hole in the bottom right hand corner of the door. It will look like a half circle and be rather small. If you move this half circle around with a very small screwdriver or knife the door will unlock.
saved my little cousin a thousand times like that,

normally for a push button type of door knobs, there's a groove at the front of the knob outside where you can use a coin or anything flat to twist it to unlock the door if you accidentally locked it from inside...however, in your case since you have taken out the handle and the inside handle fell off, you might need to find a locksmith to pick open the lock.....good luck.

If this is an internal door... the metal thing in the middle, do not pull it out. There are a couple of holes you should see in that metal thing. Insert a butter knife or screw driver into one of these holes (you may have to try this on each of the holes). And push the knife or screw driver towards to hinge side of the door. This should move the bolt out of the door jamb and allow you to open the door.
Good luck!!!

With the door knob off you will be able to put a screwdriver into through the hole in the strike mechanism and turn it, thus drawing back the strike and opening the door.

Easy peasy.. Take a butter knife and slide it thru the space between the door and the door jam.. find the part that slips into the hole in the frame and pull the knife across it.. similarly you can use a credit card..

put something in the hole (that fits) and turn it. You might need to use a screw driver, or something that won't just trun in the hole. might be some sort of a pin that needs to be pushed in to unlock the door.
