Things I Love:
~Cheap houses as you said. You can get a nice 3 bedroom house with a large yard for $150 K and up. You can get a dream home for $300 K. Check out the following areas:
Liberty
Overland Park
Lenexa
Kansas City North
Westwood/Plaza area
Brookside area
~Cost of Living. Gas is cheap. Groceries are cheap. Utilities are cheap.
~Great schools. With exception of KCMO school district, most of the suburbian areas offer some of the countries top K-12 schools.
~Very community oriented. If you make the time, there are many activities going on throughout Kansas City that celebrate the community.
~People are great. Most are very friendly and down to earth.
~Safe in most parts of the city. When downtown avoid the blocks east of Main.
~Pride for the city. Citizens and especially home owners take a lot of care and pride in there community. Schools and a clean city is a result of this pride.

Things I Hate:
~Sprawl. The city is very spread out, however most of the large suburb areas have everything you need including dining, shopping, etc. But the best entertainment, shopping and dining is in the downtown and plaza area and Overland Park.
~Weather. Winters are very, very cold and not pretty. There is more ice than snow for much of the winter, which makes it difficult to travel to different parts of the city. Summers are hot, muggy and unpredictable. Some days it pours, some days you will be dieing of the heat. Spring & Fall are amazing though.
~Little career opportunity. Unless you are in the Biotech field, telecommunications, transportation or a government employee, it is difficult to find work without knowing some body. While it is a big city, it is like a small community when job hunting.

I live & work near Kansas City. I love: the friendly people, the fountains & the architecture on the Country Club Plaza (even though I can't afford anything there!), Gates BBQ, the Liberty Memorial and Union Station, the Nelson-Atkins Museum. When I was younger I liked the clubs in the Westport area. Things I don't like: the KCMO school district (my kids didn't go there, but I hear it's really bad), the almost constant road construction in the metro area, and the lack of decent road signs in some areas as a result of construction. (The detours are sometimes illogical.) I don't like hearing KC referred to as "Cowtown", since the stockyards disappeared years ago. Overall, I like KC.

Excellent BBQ, Music, not a bad place to raise a family, horrible driving conditions due to seemingly endless road construction !!
