Simply because in the English language, it's awkward to just say Netherlands.
It really means, lower or underwater lands. " The " just makes it easier to say. Besides being the right term for Holland.

you put the prefix "the" to something that is something big.

the netherlands must be something big though not by land area maybe by economy and other stuff..

Good question - I don't know. It's the same with "the" United States and "the" United Kingdom.
