how long do they last before spoiling if not opened. are they good to put into emergemncy packs?

MRE...or Meals Ready to Eat are what our troops eat when they are in the battlefield. Most MRE's are good for 3-5 years. They can last longer if they are kept in cold storage. I use them when taking day-long hiking trips. Our soldiers during World War II got cigarettes in their MRE's. Today's MRE's have chewing gum instead.
