This could be a panic attack, or some type of sleap apnea. You should go to a doctor for a check up and make sure you are okay first. Also, try to take deep breaths (through your nose) before falling asleep, try this for about 10 minutes to calm yourself.
Peace!

Is it not just a dream that you can't breathe? If you feel out of breath when you wake up you could have sleep apnea. That usually happens to people who are overweight. You would have to have a sleep study to tell if you did have it or not. It's where you stop breathing during your sleep

I agree with the others... you need to see a doctor. Could be sleep apnea and I know a guy that died b/c he stopped breathing in the middle of the night... he was 26 years old!!

maybe sleep apnea... see your doc and they will suggest you go to a sleep lab to make sure.. Do it soon. it can be dangerous if it is severe enough.. if they find out you have sleep apnea they will put you on a machine at night called a c-pap. it goes over your nose and mouth (as in a mask) and pushes air into your lungs.. you will sleep better... and feel better ohh i forgot to ask you are you sleepy all the time when you are awake.. that also might be an indication that you might have sleep apena.

This sounds like something I've heard of before. I think it was called sleep apnea. Read about it here... http://www.sleepapnea.org/
Your doctor can confirm if that what your problem is and can help you out. Sleep Apnea is dangerous and shouldn't be ignored. It is in fact extremely common and cure-able. :)

you need to go to a sleep clinic and see if you can get it worked out to what is the specific cause, its a real disease, if you are very overweight that is one main reason but there are others. also try the breathe right strips and dont sleep on your back.

You need to see a doctor. Some people have to be on breathing machines at night, you should go asap.

there is a sleep disorder that makes you do this.. I am not sure what it is called.. it is when you are in an almost dream like state... it is not sleep apnea... but there is a specific name for it.. I would talk to your doctor or a sleep clinic and they can tell you more about it... Good luck :)

I've never heard of that but I would guess sleep apnea...usually a person is unaware of it though...the only other thing is maybe it's an anxiety attack and it takes you a whle to come out of it. Tell your doc for sure.
