Did you spill some oil? Any oil that may drip on the exaust manifold will burn off. Even fingerprints will burn off it gets that hot. So a little burning is normal (with small amounts of smoke) unless you spilt alot of oil. And the oil on the ground may be from the spill if you parked over the same spot. But otherwise you may have over-filled it causing the motor to get rid of some via. an oil overflow tube.

It is not the coolant. It isn't uncommon to burn a noticable amount of oil at 87,000. In fact, the industry standard of acceptance is 1 quart of oil for every 1000 miles. You added oil and may have spilled some as you poured it in the filler tube. Some oil landed on the ground and some burned off on your exhaust. That burnt smell you noticed was most likely fresh oil spilled on hot pipe. There is probably no damage. You may want to consider using a 99 cent funnel. They are sold at autoparts stores. Just make sure you clean it and wipe it down very well before using. You don't want lint, dirt, and dog hair workling its way in your engine.

Well it could be you spilled oil when filling it.. go and get your oil changed. Bet it has been a while since you have done that because that year and mileage should not need oil between changes.
It does not cost much and they will tell you if you have an oil leak and if you do it will blow up the car if you do not fix it...

I'd say you have an oil leak. The enigne will run hot if not enough oil. It will soon die if you don't get it fixed and it can be quite expensive to fix, depending on where the leak is.

Find a reliable mechanic and take it there.
Check your oil level now. It might have a leak, so keep an eye on it.
