Traditionally, a Rainstick is made from the dried stem of a cactus, the spines of the cactus are hammered through to the inside. Small pebbles or gravel fill the Rainstick and strike the spines as they fall. Metal nails are also frequently used however natural cactus spines give a more tonal, musical sound. Rainsticks may also be made from the stems of Bamboo plants. Bulk manufactured Rainsticks – for example those often used for educational purposes – are often machined from plastic or metal, with the beads also being made from synthetic materials. This decreases the cost greatly.

The 'real' ones are made of cactus. They are naturally hollow. In a helix pattern you put wood pins in it so that no matter how you turn the tube the stones or beans inside must roll down it.
