The what: It is a sensor that tells the computer where the cam position is ( and inadvertently the piston and stroke) so that it can then tell the ignition coils to fire properly.

The where: Usually near the front of the engine and at the cam area.

Why do you suspect that is the issue? Take it in to a Nissan dealer for a diagnostic test before the computer clears it from memory. Verify what the real issue is then if it is within your ability to repair go for it, if not pay the man and go on with what you do best. You'll get the repair done right and faster than you can fumble your way thru yourself and maybe loose use of the car for several days.

Nissan has a notorious problem with its Cam position and Crank position sensors. They are both in the distributor.
You can purchase them and install them, but by the time you get it all done, and with the frustration, time and monetary expense, replace the distributor.
I recommend (from experience) NOT to use a rebuilt unit. Buy one from Nissan, or if all you can find is aftermarket, at least use one from NAPA.
The industry inside scoop is that the same rebuilder for Nissan is the one for NAPA. I have no proof of this, but I have been told so by my Nissan parts dealer.

Good Luck

yes a bad cam sensor can prevent a car from starting.it should be right by the water pump, close to the cam.sounds like you got a bad 1.why dont you take your car to auto zone, they can check it out for you,it doesnt cost anything,it might be something else.and does your check engine light come on?it should if its bad.good luck.and by the way, when you put anything like on ,you got to unhook the neg. terminal first.and when you install it,have the codes cleared in the comp.
