A company called the Nielsen Ratings does the ratings for local and national television.

They survey a very small part of the population. A small box on viewer's televisions records what the viewer watches. They then use this statistical sample to determine how many people watch a show nationally.

they dont know for sure . there ratings are based on what the nealson familys watch (nealson famlies are familys wich the nealson company sets up with equpment to monater the shows they watch ) this is only like 1000 familys and cant give an acurate rating but it dose provide a ball park figure give or take up to 15%

some take polls...thay call about 100 to 500 people and ask. then they calculate, using statistics, the POSSIBLE number of people watching. others use electronics to detect which channel your tv is tuned to, then again calculate the possible number of watchers
