Because they have to be. Iraq is NOT an easy fix. We will have to be in Iraq as a military presence for years, and a great parallel is the occupation of Japan after WWII, only I doubt that six years will be all that we need to instill constitutional liberalism, and democracy into the Iraqui culture. Anyway, I digress...
The reason the troops are in Iraq is simple; if there is no military presence, there is nothing to keep Iraq from first succumbing to anarchy, and then, once again, dictatorship. As the invading force, it is our responsibility to see this through, because if we don't who knows just how catastrophic the results of pulling out would be? Not to mention that our international credibility is already damaged, and would be further damaged if we did not clean up our mess.

Because we have yet to accomplish what we started. Set up a democratic, stable, financial solvent and social responsible country with a strong military force that will not only be bale to govern it self but influence others in the region to follow the path of anti facism. So that when time comes to fight in the middle east the US will have an ally in there.

And most importantly of all when the US can benefit from an ally in the field of oil production and purchases. Once we start buying large quanmtaties from Iraq (2010 or so) this 40 year fear bargining with the other oil bearing countries in the mid east will end. They will have to lower the oil down to reasonable prices. Particularly because US/CHina relations are getting better and we can so-bargain with Mideast Oil.

Thats when

In order for the new government to protect itself from extremist it will need a security detail of about 200,000 people; its up to about 120,000 but the troops are needed there until this training is done and the Iraqi government can defend itself against these terrorist.

Some on the far left here think these terrorist are freedom fighters; really....I ask you this if they were freedom fighters could they not lay down their weapons and enjoy the political process to pursue their ways? Against us they no doubt could, but they do not want too because their ways are extreme and not tolerated in any civilized nation (beheading civilians, killing children playing soccer, attacking religous groups etc). This is what the left in our country defends....very sad.

The troops are still over there becasue pulling them out would be a political disaster for those who put them in. Furthermore, the perpetrators of this war are making more and more money from defense contracts the longer the troops stay over there. The war is a cash cow for the defense industry. They will milk it for all its worth.

We cannot quit until the country is as secure as is possible. Only a fool would pull out at this time, and we know candidates will try to make us believe that they will immediately bring everyone home.
It would be a major mistake and only a fool would do it. Unfortunately, it is very possible.

They're still there because the US wants to make sure Iraq is fully under American power and there is no dissent and attacks on Americans at all.

Best of luck to you and your son, 4kids4dogs.

Other responders, please note. The above sentiment is more important than your expressions of hatred for your political opponents.

Let's try a little less hateful infighting, and a little more support, regardless of why you think we're there, OK? They're our young people and they're in harm's way.
