Pride. Each service is taught to believe that they are the best, et cetera. I think that because all of the US military is good at killing terrs, they should all give each other a high-five.

Silly macho competition.
Kind of like the nature program where they show rams butting heads to try to display dominance.
Except that the Rams actually have a functional purpose. The winner there gets to mate with the best and most desirable females of the species.
It does not work that way for military competition. The highest quality females avoid servicemembers.

My husband's an infantryman in the army. Personally, I think it's a mutated version of nationalism. When you go to basic training/boot camp/whatever, they are taught that they are THE BEST, that the way they do things are the only way to really accomplish things. It's not just between the different branches, it's also an issue between the different jobs in the military, particularly between grunts (infantry) and pogs (Person Other than Grunt, i.e. medics, mechanics, etc.).

there can be no rival between them you see they each play a different role and the very best of them all are the killer machines and the best murderers ever trained in the world all over the world and the toughest truest talented agents in the world and they are only taught to kill kill kill kill kill and i respect them because they don't play and when i tell you who they ARe you must respect them these boys are the best when it comes to the killing tactics they protect and they kill and they climb swim jump run and are the most dedicated of them all you see i had a man do something for me! from the marine and he did it with no problem in 2 minutes and that was he climbed in my window on the third floor and opened the door i was locked out and he was a friend of mine! they can do the impossible and they are the
MARINES THE BEST THERE EVER HAVE EVER BEEN!
now for battle straight up the army is the best ever and for the seas the marines are the best ever !so you see they had better shut up and get on with the getting on!

i know in the army we do it between different branches (i.e. signal, engineers, admin, finance, infantry,etc....)
its just recognizing the difference and playing upon it. the same a bully, brother, sister or cousin would do!
airman, marines, army, and navy all do different thing, in different ways, for different missions!
all for the same and common goal

It's just guys wanna have fun stuff. When it comes down to it, its not the color of the uniform thats important, but the color of the flag. Ask any vet.
