Between the two of these guitars, assuming they're both at the same price, what will the differences be and which will be a better guitar? Also, are the Les Pauls very heavy?

It depends on what style of music you want to play!

A Les Paul is naturally better suited for harder rock styles because it is much heavier and has dual humbucker pickups. If you want to play hard rock on a Strat you need a fat strat, which has a bridge humbucker. A strat is more versatile usually for other styles of music, and it is easier to play fast on it and such. They have different neck lengths so it's best to try both out before buying :)

They are both great guitars that should last you a lifetime of enjoyment, as long as you buy the American made ones.

As everyone else has said, its personal preference....

Personally I keep wavering between the two... I had a strat, decided it wasn't a warm enough tone for more jazz style music, so I bought a guitar with les paul style dual humbuckers... they have a great thick and full sound thats great for heavy rock or lead playing. Lots of fun to play.

My main guitar now is sort of a hybrid I did myself, I gutted a foreign imitation strat and put in a jazz humbucker neck pickup, a strat single coil center pickup (you cant beat that twang, its a great sound you wont come close to with a les paul) and a seymour duncan les paul style neck pickup for that real hot blues playing, or for simply more prescence... its the closest I can get to the best of both worlds.

So basically its pick and choose... with a strat you'll get that beautiful twang and some great treble-heavy lead tones. With a les paul you'll get an extremely high output warm and heavy sound that is also phenomenal. I'd say play them yourself, or listen to albums of artists you like that play each (ex. Hendrix for the strat, Jimmy Paige for a les paul)

Have fun!

the les paul is a lot heavier than the fender. it also depends on what style of music you want to play. they have totally different sounds, so it is best to go somewhere that will allow you to play them both and compare. personally, i have a strat.

Epiphone is low line.

Gibson Les Paul is the real deal, and yes it is heavy.

But price shouldn't be you deal here. These two guitars sound completely different. Which one do you like when you play them.

It's BB King vs Robert Cray.
