Every time you start your car, the car's PCM does a self-test of all of the systems, including the SRS.
If it issues the test command and gets back information that isn't registered in its programming, it will disable the SRS and illuminate the warning light, informing the driver that the system has been disabled. This is your clue to repair the system.
If you have access to a scanner, you can draw out the codes, which will indicate which circuit/component is at fault.
If your car is not OBD II, you can use a paperclip to gather the codes by jumping pins in the ALDL. Recommend you get the repair manual for further information.
This is not a repair you are likely to have either equipment or knowledge to pursue.
I recommend taking it either to the dealer or a quality body shop for recommendations.

Good Luck

the light itself can mean a number of things (bad sensor, system itself is disabled, or fuse is out) you will need to hook it up to a diagnostic computer. Usually you can get them to run a simple diagnostic at AutoZone, but you are not going to be sure untill that car is hooked up to computer. Personally I would at least pay someone to do a diagnostic on the car.

Your alternator will go out eventually. I have a 99 Alero and for about 6 months the anti lock brake or low traction light would come on randomly and stay on. Then one day my dash lit up like a Christmas tree. The next day my car completely died. Take it to a mechanic and ask them to test the alternator. I guarantee you it's going to go bad soon.
