then why is porn legal? I don't care either way if it is or isn't, but I have always been curious about this. I mean, there is not much difference between the two, right? Does anybody out there know why?

To the person who stated that there is no acting in prostitution....boy has she been fooling you! they call that selling the "Girlfriend Experience" or "GFE" - the illusion that the hooker is there because she is attracted to you.

Prostitution is illegal as one more way to control women. It used to be that almost all prostitutes were women. Male prostitutes have become more recognised in society in recent decades, but most of those still play a feminine role and recieve similar kinds of bias and oppression.

Porn is a largely male dominated industry, and was in the past more about "free speech" and images of inactive bodies. That is no longer the case, but the laws have not changed.

They each have very destructive effects on society. Not a moral judgement but an ethical one based on the harm done to the individuals and the society.

Look at it this way:

If prostitution WAS legal, then many people would do this instead of taking on jobs that may be more productive to society. STDs would grow out of control.

Its an idea. I'm not necessarily pro/con about prostitution. I think that there's absolutely no difference. Sex is sex, and allowing people to view an act that's paid for does not make it anymore moral/immoral. Let's just say this isn't the only contradiction in the American way of life. :)

Good question, and good luck to you!

Prostitution is worlds oldest profession that exists. It is a very important part of our society. We all know that.... but at the same time contradictorily, SEX is something which is a need/very useful and dangerous if not handled carefully.
Man kinds nature is to go beyond the border line. If not controlled, the society will be a jungle soon. We need a border line. Making illegal prostitution is a border line. Through porn people enjoys but at the same time learns.

That's true. I guess because the government can't tax it. What would that look like for them? If they take tax from it, it means they think it's ok. I'm endorsing porn but it's entertainment so it's all right; as opposed to i'm endorsing prostitution as a way of life, that's bad. It's all about reps and money. It's the system man. Plus a lot of those government big wigs got money invested in porn, or friends that do, so they got dough comin in. Like the car companies and big corporations.

Prostitution isn't illegal in N. Nevada and porn is covered by the Constitution regarding free speach. Besides, could you imagine a politician coming home and telling his wife that he just voted to legalize prostition for all fifty states? I'd bet dinner would be a little tense until the first male brothel opened up.

Because porn is all acting, it's like taking an R-rated movie to the next level. You wouldn't call someone in an R-rated movie that did a nude scene a prostitute, would you? It's the same thing. There's no acting in prostitution and it isn't taped and sold to the general public.

Because it's got to be done in secret, feeling ashamed and trying to prevent others from knowing what you're doing. What the establishment cannot stand about prostitution is that prostitutes are out there in the street, and they remind us all that we are sexual beings.
