This house was built in 1928. It has the old brick columns halfway up and then wood columns to the roof on the front of the house. my front porch is about 16 x 8 concrete slab. I hate this look and I would like to get the old brick columns removed but there is a small room over the porch. I would like the front porch to be screened in to make it appear different. With the room over the porch I wonder if I will need to keep the big brick columns. I don't have a lot of money to work with but I will need to get something done before long. Who will I need to contact? How expensive do you think this could be?

The only room over the front porch is very small like a 16 x 8. The house is a large frame 2 story.

most contractors should be able to support the roof while you remove the brick columns . then buy a column with proper load bearing capabilities , like henderson , black and green ( hbg ) which sells composite columns

You dont have to keep the 'brick' per say, but you will need support of some kind for that room above. This could be a wall, instead of columns, since you are considering screening in the front porch area.

Some kind of temporary support will need to be put in place, when the brick/wood columns are removed, and something else put in their place. Some alternatives are aluminum columns...they come in a variety of styles and lengths, and can be painted any color you wish.

I would contact a local builder about doing the job...at least get some estimates, and pick their brains about how to go about it. That should give you enough information to make a decision then.

Good Luck!

You might need to ask some people in brick masonry and or framing. These 2 trades might be able to assist. You can ask any Home Depot for their assistance or suggestions in these trades. Go the library or google your inquiry there it might bring up some info to help you.
