Actually....he moved to LA to pursue his music career with his band. When he wasnt getting enough gigs or enough $$ from it, he took a job selling pens over the phone. To help the time pass by quicker he would make up silly voices and accents and get into character when making those phone calls. I'm not sure how long he did that gig for. He was friends with Nicolas Cage back then, who was barely starting his acting career too. Nic heard about a role for Nightmare on Elm Street and introduced Johnny to Wes Craven and Johnny was pretty much hired on the spot. Once he finished that role in the movie, he went on to do a few other low budget films, Last Resort and I think he had a cameo in the second Nightmare on Elm Street, and also a small role in an NC-17 or R(not sure) cheap film(no he wasnt nude)...and from then on his career grew. He then went on to do 21 Jump Street and towards the last few years there he was starting to rebel against what the media was turning him into. "The Teenage Heartthrob!" Thus leading to his rebel stage and him wanting to take on abstract and abnormal roles, he wanted to get away from that stereotypical typecast...since, afterall, he is VERY ATTRACTIVE. So yeah, thats basically how it happened.
Wow, I didnt realize I knew that much about Johnny.

A friend of mine read about that and told me, not too long ago, that Johnny Depp was attempting a music career. It obviously wasn't working too well and he was in desperate need for cash so he found an ad about an audition. He had nothing to lose so he auditioned and got it. Since then he claimed that acting wasn't so bad and obviously continued in that profession. Where my friend read this from, I don't know. Wikipedia might say.

I know on the actors studio he mentioned something close to that. Couldn't really say what he said exactly, though it was an interesting interview
