I have both as well, but I love my iPod thanks to its amazing, intuitive design. Both will play .mp3 files, but it's so much easier to find my music on the iPod, with all the different "views" like Artist/Album/Playlist, etc. The iPod is also much easier to control when working out, or driving, when you can't pay full attention to what you're doing - just a quick click on the wheel and that's it.
It's really easy to get music and files on/off the iPod and there are a bunch of ways to do this not using iTunes. (see source below)
Navigating the file structure on my old iRiver was a nightmare and the database feature never worked for me.
The iPod has a wide range of aftermarket products designed specifically for it, like the alarm clock, all sorts of car chargers, FM transmitters, power chargers, etc. So many companies make these accessories which allows you to choose the one that works best for you, and thus the quality is better with all that competition. I never found that with iRiver - only iRiver accessories worked with it, and you have to buy those direct from the company.
In short, I *love* my iPod and I'm not one of those Apple fanatics. I held out for a long time, thinking I could find a Windows Media Player compatible product to do the same thing, and after 5 other MP3 players, ended up with the iPod anyway. I wish I had bought that one first!

I got an iRiver last year, didnt like it and gave it to my daughter within a month. For a year I held off giving in to the evil Apple corporation, but just got a Nano4gig and love it, and like it alot better than the iRiver or the Rio I bought my wife for Christmas.

the iPod hands down, its got a proven track record, and you can find anything for it, and any type of support for it, through Apple's forums. I dont know what daughters_a_wookie's talking about, Apple being evil, I think you been smoking to much of that Wookie Chronic, because last time I checked Microsoft is the horrible evil corporation that ignores its client base and puts out glitchy freakin operating systems.. yea thats right. My advice, through your iRiver in the River haha.
