My older sister is a SERIOUS cross country runner. She is 15, and she is really good. She loves running. The only problem is that sometimes she gets awful side stich cramps. Is there anything she can do to make the cramps go away? Please help!!!!!!

Before and after her run she should stretch. She probably already does, but it sounds like she could do some more of it.

She also needs to make sure she is properly hydrated. Though there is such thing as too much water, she should err on that side.

During her runs, she should focus on her breathing. Make sure she uses her entire lungs. That maxs her oxygen, which muscles need or they cramp. Also, see if she can alternate which foot is touching the ground when she exhales. A lot of people get side stitches because the exhaling of the lungs combined with coming down on their right foot (which jars your liver) pinches their muscles. I personally alternate and never have cramping problems. That trick works for some people, but not everyone, but is still worth a shot.

Stomach cramps are caused by many factors, and none of us can diagnose your sister over the internet. One of the causes can be eating disorders or the failure to use the restroom everyday. Tell her to check with her doctor because he/she will have better info on her medical histories and is better prepared to answer this question. Meanwhile, tell your sister to NOT take any medication as there can be a risk of overdosage if not taken correctly. Just wait and go to the doctor tomorrow.

I am a coach for a college team and if she's getting cramps its because of a few things. She must warm up before she runs. She must also streach. I make my girls warm up a little bit (a few laps) before they streach. also, she must drink and stay hydrated in practice and after races. Vitamin water and gatorade are great!

She should try stretching a little more before running. She may also be eating and drinking too much prior to a run.

how much water is she drinking before she runs? It may be that she is drinking too much, or that she is not getting enough hydration.
