The can be very tasty if you leave the stupid powdered sugar off. I don't know who thought sugar was a good idea on a savory sandwich.

A good Monte Cristo type sandwich is made with a well-flvored ham, swiss cheese (or whatever you prefer) and a good mustard inside and dipped in french toast batter (egg and milk) before frying in butter. We put a generous amount of black pepper in the egg mixture and of course no vanilla or sugar.

Even a plain grilled cheese sandwich gets kicked up a nothc if you prepare it this way, and nearly any meat sandwich os good this way. We also do it with roast beef, cheddar and a little horseradish inside.

But no sugar. Never.
