It's not fair what they're saying about pluto, it's been a planet for hundreds of years and it orbits around the sun therefore it's a REAL planet.

Sunset > Excellent analogy, to me it'll remain a REAL planet forever. There's a petition going on at http://pleasesavepluto.org/ which opposes the IAU's silly decision. Help sign it and make a difference.

Pluto has not been know for 'hundreds of years', and it orbits the sun in an atypical way.

It had long been clear that Pluto, discovered in 1930, stood apart from the previously discovered planets. Not only is it much smaller — only about 1,600 miles in diameter, smaller than the Moon — but its elongated orbit is tilted with respect to the other planets, and it goes inside the orbit of Neptune on part of its 248-year journey around the Sun.

It does not qualify under the following definition.

A planet must meet three criteria: it must orbit the Sun, it must be big enough for gravity to squash it into a round ball, and it must have cleared other things out of the way in its orbital neighborhood. The last of these criteria knocks out Pluto and Xena, which orbit among the icy wrecks of the Kuiper Belt, and Ceres, which is in the asteroid belt.

There is no such thing as a REAL planet and other things. There are planets as defined above, and other things, like pluto as a dwarf planet. It still has the word 'planet' in its name..., just a dwarf planet.

sigh. Dwarf people. If you read what you wrote...dwarf PEOPLE... the title still includes the word 'people'! Therefore they are people, just dwarf ones....

This question just shows vast amounts of ignorance on the asker's part. And anyone that thinks this question is clever has joined in the ignorance. Pathetic. nnjamerson has it right.
