I used to work at Montgomery Wards Corp HQ in Chicago. On December 28, 2000---bankruptcy was declared. Lots of people lost their jobs immediately. However, there were still liquidation and going out of business sales going on for several months. I was there until mid February. And I want to say that the last few stores closed by April-ish. Also, stores were closing for years preceeding this.

The Dearborn store closed in spring, 2000.
I believe the store in Wonderland was the last in Michigan, and it closed in June 2001.
Montgomery Ward declared bankruptcy on December 28th, 2000.
