Core Duo is the world's first low-power (less than 25 watts) Dual Core microprocessor, with the previous low being the Opteron 260 and 860 HE at 55 watts. Core Duo was released on 5 January 2006, with the other components of the Napa platform. It is the first Intel processor to be used in Apple Macintosh products (the Apple Developer Transition Kit machines, non-production units distributed to some developers, used Pentium 4 processors).

The Pentium D is a series of microprocessors that was introduced by Intel at the Spring 2005 Intel Developer Forum.
The Pentium D was the first announced multicore CPU (along with its more expensive twin, the Pentium Extreme Edition) from any manufacturer intended for desktop computers. Intel underscored the significance of this introduction by predicting that by the end of 2006 over 70% of its shipping desktop CPUs would be multi-core. Analysts have speculated that the clock rate race between Intel and AMD is largely over, with no more exponential gains in clock rate likely. Instead, as long as Moore's Law holds true, it is expected that the increasing number of transistors that chip-makers can incorporate into their CPUs will be used to increase CPU throughput through other methods, such as adding cores.

The two cores of the Pentium D processor are substantially similar to previous Pentium 4 chips, while the two cores of the Core Duo are much newer, almost completely re-engineered. They are a new generation of Intel processors.

Regarding the previous answer stating that Pentium Ds are used almost entirely in desktop PCs and Core Duos are used entirely in laptops, that is correct, but misses the point. Intel's new generation processor for desktops is the Core 2 Duo.

First of all, duo core are not just used in laptops. I know a lot of people who use them for desktops. Second, the difference is multi-tasking. From what I understand, one processor works on one thing, while another processor lets you do another which makes the computer faster.
