overdrive is a gear that is on the high end of your cars tranmission.
It gives you more turns of the wheels per turn of the power shaft than other gears. It is best for gas. Downside- you lose tourque. Bad news for accleration, or towing ( if overtaxed)

Dont listen to those other Idiots, Overdrive on an automatic transmision is usually 4th gear, that is if it is a 4 speed auto. On my car I allways drive with the overdrive on. It only needs to be turned off if you are towing. Most modern cars have Overdrive, I used to have a Honda, It did not have overdrive it had a 4 spd automatic. The difference is that in overdrive you will not be able to reach Max speed. My current car with overdrive off will reach a speed of 115 with overdrive off. It will not go over 100 with it on.

Leave the Overdrive on, you will get better mileage.

drive is for more power and uses more gas. Overdrive is for cruising speeds and let's the engine run at a lower rpm which saves gas. Think of it like a stick shift. Drive would be 4th gear and overdrive 5th gear.

Normal gear ratios in automotive transmissions end at 1:1, that is for every rotation the input shaft makes the output shaft also makes a rotation.
Overdrive is when the ratio changes to the output shaft making more than one rotation for every rotation of the input shaft.
For example: A 1:1 (third gear in most automotive transmissions) gear ratio would mean that if the input shaft is turning at 1,000 RPM then the output shaft is also turning at 1,000 RPM.
In overdrive (fourth gear and higher in most automotive transmissions) if the input shaft is turning at 1,000 RPM then the output shaft is going to turning faster than that, say 1,500 RPM.
Clearly being in overdrive is going to be better for your gas mileage so long as you're traveling at speeds high enough to use that gear.

drive is 1 to 1 ratio (meaning that the wheels are turning at the exact speed of the engine) overdrive is around .66 to 1 ratio allowing you to go at higher speeds easier and greatly improves gas mileage...

Overdrive is used when you need extra power to go like up a steep hill and it uses more power hence more gas.
