having recently purchased a house, we were contimplating having a pool, only to disciver that the previous owners had a pool but have filled it in, we know that is is filled with sand, but we are not sure whether the pool is badly damaged, a friend of mine said that usually they are punctured(it's fibreglass) and left to drain then filled, if we want to put a pool in do we need to remove this one or can it be repaired in some way, is this the only way that you can empty them. I don't have any contact address for the previous owners or i would ask them.

When they fill in old pools they do punch holes in the old pool for drainage.
If it was me I would get rid of the old pool and put in a new one. It could end up costing you more money to get the old pool re-stalled and in the end it will still be a old fibreglass pool you are swimming in and chances are the plumbing is all damaged as well.

Start out with a brand new one and you will know in the back of your mind your not going to have any problems in the future.

Either way, you should remove the existing pool or have to pay to excavate and put in other plumbing.
Dig out the debris and then you can check the existing poll - if it is useable, or patchable, a fibreglass repair kit can be used to put new fibreglass matting on the holes, sand them smooth, and then epoxy over them to get the existing pool working again.
If it;s too badly degraded, you would have to empty it anyways to remove it.

#1 Don't bother the previous owners - they killed the pool
#2 Get three quotes (at least) to build your new pool
#3 Beware the pool - unless you live somewhere HOT it won't likely improve your home value (Sept. issue 2006 Money Magazine) and most folks get bored with it after 2-years or less (My pool guy) and it's expensive to maintain...
#4 If you live somewhere hot - and you'd rather be in the pool than the A/C (like me) refer to recommendation #2 and let a professional handle it, but check the BetterBusinessBureau first and ask for references!!

chances are if this fiberglass pool was filled in, the previous owners got what they paid for...about 15 years of swimming.
usually once they go bad, there isn't much to do about it unless you like to waste money.

i'd certainly have someone come out and dig.....then remove and if possible - IF your wanting a pool, get one that has to be plastered and tiled...
