1. Disconnect all usb devices
2. Go to Control Panel > System. Choose the "Hardware Tab" and click on the "Device Manager".
3. Expand the section for "Universal Serial Bus Controllers".
4. Right-click on each entry in this section and select "uninstall".
5. Reboot the computer.
6. Windows *should* try and reinstall the USB drivers after booting.
7. Connect usb devices and see if windows recognizes them now.

Try checking for Ghosted Devices. XP does not handle USB devices that well. Try following this Microsoft article might help.

PS : Do this after u uninstall the device from the devicemanager.

could be the drivers
if the machine is using usb 2.0 ports makesure you have the proper drivers installed. if you installed a new mother board check the disk that came with it for the usb drivers...windows may not have them
also makesure you have the latest microcrap updates installed...

as for the ipod... if you formatted it on a mac first then the pc won't be able to detect it... ipods work from pc to mac not mac to pc...

good luck

You have to download iTunes and your iPod hook-up software before your computer will actually detect that an iPod is connected. If you have, then just try restarting iTunes and doing anything possible to see if it will connect. If you are on iTunes, then go up in the menu and fine preferences. Under preferences click iPod and see if it says it's connected. Sometimes it just takes a long while.

Check carefully inside your computer if is a desktop, check the usb cable that is connected in your motherboard. Or Restore your computer to the time that the usb works. Good luck
