There is something that you need to understand about a college degree. What you need to understand is the difference between training and eduction. When you are trained, that means that you have the knowledge to perform a task or job. This is what the core requirements for your degree get you, training in the field you intend to pursue. If all you want is training, then you get an associates degree and or go to a trade school. On the other hand, a bachelor's degree says that you are more than just trained. It says that you are also educated. This means that you have knowledge that goes beyond the minimum needed for your job. It means that you have the ability to look at the larger picture. This is why, for a bachelor's degree you are required to take classes (biology included) that are outside of your area of study.

I am a biology major, so for me it is really fun, but I would like to give couple of suggestions, how you can make the class more interesting.
First of all try to take a biology class that is an introduction , and not some anatomy or physiology class that is intended for very well prepared majors. That's number one mistake that every non-major makes.
Try to really be sure that you have done suggested pre-reqs ( suggested=you are screwed w/out them, but they are too many for us to require, so we are gonna"suggest" them )
DO NOT leave anything until the last moment, a lot of is memorization, and from personal experience, things like biology of cell nucleus, parasitology, molecular biology cannot be memorized the night before.
If there is any dissection going on, you have the right to say, you know what, this is too creepy for me, I am not gonna do it, but make sure that you get the point of it, at least have a glance.
Don't believe that you are going to be tested on everything that is in the book, just pay attention to anything that the instructor
spends too much time on, and whenever you see biochemical cycles, like TCA, Kreb's, etc, make sure that you know every single word and arrow on them.
And on the question why we have to study biology, well, any educated person has know the fundamental facts about ourselves and our surroundings. The term biology means a science that studies life. Once you get hang of it you'll like it. And believe me I didn't exactly enjoy my history class either. ;))

because you are alive (hopefully) and biology is the study of things which are alive. So it will teach you somthing about yourself.
And knowledge is always a good thing, it does come handy in unexpected places if you use it.
As we are biological systems as it much of our world around us there are a number of biological questions which concern society very much and have to be discussed like the use of stem cells, gene engineering, biodiversity, use of biotechnology or even evolution. Some basic understanding in biology is required to even understand the subject under discussion, so everybody should have some, it's about us and the life around us.

Well learning Bilogogy is definitely imp according to me. Knowing ur own body and about rest of living things in this world is just so amazing. If not at higher levels may be atleast the basics.
Evolution, genetics, molecular biology, anatomy, botany, zoology, biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry...
All these subjects are so practical and interesting.

Because they learn so much from reading, "The Dependent Gene". I hate biology class but I need two credits of science to graduate and chemistry is not happening.

if your course is in medical field, like medicine, nursing, pharmacy, med. tech, and your an education student you need to, but if your in the technical field I don't think you have to. Is'nt biology an interesting subject? You have to love it anyway.
