The most obvious result would be that the Security Council would be able to pass more resolutions based solely on majority rule. With a Security Council free of veto power, perhaps there would be less undermining by the five nations that possess veto power now. In my opinion, this would strengthen the role of the United Nations but perhaps at the detriment of the United States, which has been the primary user of veto power over the last few decades.

I can see a situation where because of the unilateral superpower status of the United States, the UN might be more willing to check the US with Security Council resolutions unfavourable to the US. This most likely would cause the US to be less supportive of the UN and be negligent in paying its share of the UN budget. The result might lead to a greater voice for supporters of US withdrawal from the UN all together. Whether that would be strong enough to materialise is unknown, but a wider distrust of the UN by Americans would be almost certain.

On the other hand, it might cause the US to begin learning the finer points of diplomacy, which the US never needed to learn because of isolation both geographical and international prior to WWII, and due to superpower status afterward. Right now, the US doesn't need crafty diplomacy as they tend to have economic leverage with many nations in the world. A stronger UN might work to undermine the hold that the US has on the economies in many third-world nations, forcing the US to resort to true diplomacy in order to build coalitions favourable to US interests. Perhaps this might lead to a great cohesion of the international community as no one country would overshadow other nations, even though the US would still be a world power.
