Not everyone has friends who send them Word files that they need to open on their Mac without installing Microsoft Word (Yes, there is an Apple version of the Office Suite, including Microsoft Word). Apple computers are typically great for media (photo editing, music/video editing, etc.). And now, if you get an Apple computer with an Intel chip, you can run Boot Camp and run Windows or Mac OSX on the same computer. That way, you get the best of both worlds.

This is simillar like what if i send u a file that require u apple based program to open, u wont be able to open it using microsoft word? then why are u using microsoft programs (most of them are anyway dump). but there are other programs which provide u this kind of compatilibility, open source programs - they use thier own format as well as support some microsoft file format compatibility.
Apple has some very disnticitve features that microsoft do not have. and multimedia experience that apple provides can not be challanged.

a) Microsoft makes the office suite for Mac and PC. So you could use Word on a mac. I do.

b) You could also run Windows on a mac if you really wanted to. I like that because I do a lot of web development.

c) You could use an alternative to word like Apple's Pages product (part of iWork). Or you could use an alternative office suite like Open Office.

I have Macs and a couple (much less frequently used) Windows machines, and I have very, very infrequently run into a problem opening files other people send me.

Apple has a software that can emulate Windows. It's called Virtual PC. Check it out.
