The Harappans were a very peaceful people, they did not have any armies although they had an excellent architectural system, as seen in the remains of their cities where it is very evident that they had very well organised cities complete with public baths and an underground sewer system, etc, but when the Aryans came to North India they attacked them and pushed them towards South India the aryans were fierce warriors and they just defetaed the Harappans.

Harrapan society as we know was one of the most advanced civilizations in the world for its time. And as all civilizations it was built by the river which facilitates agriculture. There are may theories to its decline.
The Geo-social explanation was that there was a major drought which caused the land to become arid and hence the inhabitants migrated to find greener pasture.(Supposed to be the same drought that caused Israel and his sons to go to Egypt in Genesis)
The second theory, quite rampant in the sub-continent is that the Harrapan society was Dravidian i.e. the ancestors of today's South Indians. When the Aryan migration took place at these times the Dravidians found it difficult to co-inhabitate with the 'newcomers' and hence migrated further south beyond the Vindyan mountain range hence the term "Dravidian'....south of the Vindhya mountains.
The last theory is..well..simple...all good things must come to an end.
