Freud is/was highly overrated. Although he is arguably the founder of psychoanalysis, his tendency to either make everything sexual or teaching the patient to blame the parents have been points of controversy for years.
What he DID do was put forth the idea that some illnesses are of the mind and not the body, and can be treated. Mentally and emotionally ill people can "get well" with the correct treatment.
