What's important is making sure that the new power supply has the proper connector(s) for the motherboard. The ratings (300w versus 180w) are more like maximums. The more powerful supply can deliver more power (and thus run more devices), but the motherboard would draw the same amount from either supply.

no you cant you can use a 600w power supply and you wont fry a thing power supplies gives enough energy to the motherboard and other computer components the power supply has a 20 or 24 ping connector depending what type of board you have those connectors will supply the required energy to your board of course if you have a 180w p/s you wont be able to connect as many peripherals(drives, burners, card-readers,fans,lights, etc) as you will if you use a 300w,400w or 600w power supply.
so in short words the more watts the more stuff you can add to you PC remember not to top it up and give your power supply some room to work efficiently.
good luck.

That 180w is a very old (and small) power supply. Up-grading to a 300 is something you should do just as a matter of good sense.
The wattage has nothing to do with the outputs, they are all regulated so as long as you "hook" them to the correct "inputs" on your MOBO, you should have no problem.

No you wont fry it. To fry your board you would have to switch the 110 switch for US wall outlets to 230. 230volts to your motherboard will fry it plus the power supply. Burnt electrical and strong ozone and thats all she wrote. [DO NOT DO THAT] I did it about a yr ago to see just that.

your power supply only supplies power into your pc (motherboard, harddrvie, etc)...higher rating power supply is usable if you got alot of components using power or power requirements...newer motherboards use 400/450w of power...but if you got the usual things, you don't need higher rating power supply...but then, i advise you to use your 300w power supply...it's safer than your 180w power supply

The should put out the same voltage regardless of the watts...
The voltage is what would fry it...
