Babies do things at different ages but if you are not sure ask the doctor and make sure your husband is there too.

If she acts like she likes being in the sitting position, then it's okay to hold her that way for a little while every day. Babies like to try all different positions, instead of just lying flat on their backs all the time. And besides, if you don't let her know that this is a position that her body can be in, she might not sit up for a very long time, well past the usual 'around 5 or 6 months' mark.
But if she fusses when she's put into a sitting position, then she doesn't like it, and she's trying to let him know that she isn't ready for it. Babies will let you know if it's something that they don't want to be doing. Have him try something different, like getting down on the floor with her and having 'tummy time.'
No matter what, though, don't leave her like this on her own. Be right by her at all times if someone is going to sit her up, even if she's propped up on pillows, because she could easily tip over or forwards, and not be able to get herself out of that position, and *that* could hurt her.

Hi there,
Holding the baby in the sitting position for few mnts shouldit b a problem. But overdoing dfntly is.
please tell your fmly, not to make the baby do things just for their happiness. Give her time, now she will start rolling over, within a month or two she will prop up herself on those tiny hands. Ask them wouldit that give more joy, to c her efforts, failers and the final YES I HAVE DONE IT look n smile, than they get from propping her up.
You should also tell them not to raise/throw her high in the air . This the doctrs say can effect the blood folw to their brain.
Take care n dont worry..Talk to your little angel, cuddle her whenever u can.make sure u dont stop feeding her atleast she is 18 mths old.

You needn't worry about her spine, but be careful that she doesn't fall and hit her head. Babies are amazingly flexible little things, and as long as you don't leave her in that position for hours, you have nothing to worry about. Just be sure to prop her up with pillows.
As a rule, babies will tell you when they are ready for a milestone. Generally she will start sitting up by herself around the same time that she can "rock" on her hands and knees.
Don't rush any of those precious little stages...she will be a temper-tantrum-having, nose-picking, whiney little thing (whom you will still love to pieces) before you know it!

I'm no expert, but I don't think it will damage her spinal column. Possibly her back bones. It's ok to *hold* her in a sitting position. It's ok for her to be reclined against pillows to where she doesn't need holding, but don't let them try to get her to sit up on her own!
We had my son in a "Johnny Jump Up' at the age of 3.5 months and he went crazy in it. He hasn't had any damage.

Your pediatrician will know what's best but 5-6 months is when a baby is ready to start sitting up. Your husband needs to talk to the pediatrician and he needs to tell his folks what the doctor said and then tell them to butt out.

I don't think it's good for babies to be put into positions that aren't natural for their stage and development. I don't like the bebepod/bumbo seat trend that is going on currently. I don't think it's good for their hips. Not sure about their spine, though.
You can also try a chiropractor that specializes in pediatrics if you're really concerned about her spine. I have been taking both my girls to a chiropractor since birth and it's been great.

Your friends are right. If possible, do not force the baby to sit. As they grew older, they will learn to sit by themselves which indicates that their spinal column can hold it.

of course u can not sit ababy down his spinal coard is still in development and that implies that u should lay him down so that it can progrss effectively. I have 2 children and never didi i sit them until it was okay by my doctor. U need to take ur husband his ma and dad to the peditrican next time u go and ask him in front of them what he thinks about their assuptions. Remeber its ur baby not theres its ur responsibility to take care of this child if not then its negelet on ur part and that my friend ids child abuse.

You can sit her up, but for god-sakes don't let go! She fall right over! Babies that little don't have the muscle control to support themselve... but it's okay to hold her up, or prop her up on something as long as you don't walk away and leave her to fall over on her face... It won't affect her skeletal structure, it will help her develop the musculature to be able to do it on her own when she's ready....
