In musical terms, what exactly is a "Chart" and what do the people in the music business mean by it?

Can a DJ have a chart? Does he/she have to compose the song in order for it to be a Chart?

Please give examples. Thanks.

In my band, the rhythm section (drums, bass, guitar, keys) play by ear. The horns use charts, or sheet music, especially when we're learning new material. The reason it's important for Mr. Fabulous, Bones Malone and Blue Lou to have charts, is many times they are all playing different notes at the same time, but together the notes form a chord. The sheet music (or chart) gives them a common denominator, and they know if they all play what's written, the end result will be a good sound.

A chart does not have to be an original composition, although Mr. Fabulous is a great arranger and often does just that. I don't see where a D.J. would need a chart. More likely, he would have some choreographed sets with extensive notes to act as reminders.
