A colleague of mine got a high school class where the students were totally indifferent to studying. They just sat there, waiting for the bell. After the first week, she had almost decided to give it up but decided to give it one last try.
The next lesson, she walked in, sat down and did nothing, just like them. After 2 minutes or so, a guy asked what they were gonna do, and she shrugged and said: I dunno. Guy got a bit peeved and said: Well, you're here to teach, right? And she said: Yah, but I just don't feel like it. A gal asked: Aren't we at least gonna read? Teacher said: Sure, go ahead and read, but still didn't look very enthusiastic. The kids got very confused and didn't like it at all. By the end of that lesson, kids & teacher were actually talking and she got good clues to what they were interested in learning. Class remained pretty tough to handle, but things went a lot better than she'd ever thought they would.

Many times kids give up on school because they have been put-down or failed so many times, they think "why bother?" Give them little bits and pieces to be proud of...show them how to be successful and then let it blossom from there. Give them plenty of praise and be sure that you have materials that meet them at the level where they are at. You will see change, just try not to get too frustrated in the process! :) Good luck!

You have to relate to them. Thats pretty much the only way..to get to teenagers heads. All the teachers i've looked up too..all the teachers..that almost made me want to be a teacher..were relate-able. They were real people..most of them goofy..and funny..which is another way to get to them..in a serious manner..have fun..pick on them a little bit..but sometimes..there are those certain kids..that just dont care..and those..it may not be worth trying to help.

its tough to do. especially if you do not have back up with administration. i let them know that i am here to stay and that we are going to learn. i give and get respect in return.
learning is fun (i know you have heard this) and you have to pique their interests.
get involved in what is important to them, at least find out and you can do this by offering the class to make up a constitution. you pick several rules or privileges (maybe they can invent some, up to you) and allow them to decide which ones they will use in their classroom and make the abide by them. you must include things they will want, maybe eating in class. last 5 minutes of class is talk time for them. discussion day every one or two weeks for the class to discuss whatever is on their minds. divide them up in groups to discuss and vote on the topics, then vote. just like the senate does, but you could adapt it to any classroom. hang it up and leave it up and refer to it often.
have a question of the day. something fun interesting for them, and you, not educational really, and every person in the room has to respond with their thoughts opinions, whatever. let them submit questions for this and do it at the beginning of every class. just some thoughts.
hope it helps and i know its hard...i have taught high school too. good luck!

lol, i didn't care about history, and my history teacher basically forced me to learn...worst thign ever, just made me hate it more.
Just leave em alone, they don't wanna learn and theres no point in you makeing them. I didn't need history cause i'm ace'ing ap science classes easily...i think the only way is to just ignore them unless they raise their hand

You have to find a way to make them believe that learning is in their best interest. Be sneaky.

until they're interested in the subject to learn they won't try.. you have to really grab their attention and find out what makes them tick and keeps their interests
